I enjoy the USC/UCLA sports section, but how about adding UCI to it? Support your local college team! They are consistently ranked nationally and win in several sports, yet they play second fiddle to LA based colleges in The Peel.

    • July 18, 2012 11:54 am

Hi J., thank you for the comment! We actually just wrapped an in-depth iPad exclusive video documentary on UCI’s baseball season where we followed — and cheered on! — the Anteaters all season. We pick up our sports feeds (USC & UCLA) from the Sports department at The Register. I will forward your comment to them and we on the iPad team will keep our eye out for more news from UCI sports. I just moved to LA and miss the Register. The Peel is good but does not include the best oped section in the country. How do I get it?

Hi Frank, thank you for the note. I’m glad you enjoy OCR The Peel, thanks for the support! For the Opinion columns, I’d suggest you try the OCR News Edition App. Just download the app (look for the blue & white icon with the “R”), tap on “My News” in the upper left corner, then tap on “Opinion.” The Peel is a great showcase for photos, video and some of our lighter news and stories. The News Edition updates continuously 24/7 and has a great depth of news stories and columns.

Is there anyway to leave comments on individual articles using the iPad app? I couldn’t find a button on the article other than tweet or post to Facebook and the feedback button took me here. Maybe I just missed it? Thanks!

    Barry,

Just read your “10 Great Baseball Movies” article in the Orlando (Orange County, FL) Sentinel…could not have done better myself. My deceased dad was a promising catcher who received knee injury during WWII and never played in college or beyond. However he loved baseball and was so fortunate to befriend Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, Dick Williams, and other Red Sox greats and would be one of the first to start the “Yankees Suck” chant. Seeing Ray’s “Dad” in catchers gear always brings a tear for me as well…

I have been a subscriber to the Register for over 30 years. This is the only app/subscription that I am aware of that does NOT provide same day content . Why in the world doesnt the Register provide current day digital version of the paper? I also subscribe to the WSJ, NY Times etc and they all provide same day content as does USA Today etc.

    • March 24, 2012 3:09 pm

      Hi Peter,

Thank you for your feedback. Currently, we publish every evening, Monday through Saturday at 6pm. We try to capture the big stories of the day — same day content — in local news, sports, business and entertainment. Many of the stories we publish at 6pm can be found in the next morning’s paper. We are currently evaluating technical options that will enable us to publish more frequently while maintaining a design format that easily enables us to incorporate videos, graphics and photos. What are your thoughts regarding web apps and native apps? Do you use your news apps both off-line and on-line? I’d be very interested in hearing more of your thoughts and ideas! Caroline, iPad team.

Hi Caroline: I’m an Orange County Native and I also am very interested in Any News Related App – I try to keep abreast of any Local News Stories as Well as National News Stories – I currently Subscribe to NY Times, L.A. Times, USA Today, WSJ, and Orange County Register and have all of Their Current Apps Downloaded to My iPAD – I work for a Major Defense Company Contractor who has Headquarters here in the “OC” – For Security Purposes I can’t mention the name but we are heavily involved in some very Major U.S. Dept. of Defense Contracts so I try to keep abreast of everything going on in the Industry – Plus I’m a Major Player in the Financial Sector and a Part-Time Employee with the Disney Resort & Parks here in the “OC”

    • March 24, 2012 3:17 pm

      Hi Irina,
We publish every evening at 6p, Monday through Saturday. To get the latest edition, open the app, then hit the Store icon in the lower right corner of the app. You will see cover designs in chronological order with the most recenter edition in the upper left corner of the in-app Store. Just hit “download” or “free” to download and open the edition. If you are in newsstand, your daily edition may auto-download. if that is the case, tap on the Library icon — also in the lower right corner of the app — and look for the edition in the Library. I hope this answers your question and thank you for the comment! Caroline, iPad team.

The one feature I was looking for in this app was local event locations, times, costs, etc.. Maybe I’m missing something?

    • March 24, 2012 3:22 pm

      Hi Craig,
We include a daily “things to do” section where we list some of the bigger current events happening throughout the county, deals, travel and entertainment reviews. If you are looking for something specific and need a search option, I would encourage you to use the web resources ocregister.com or orangecounty.com. My apologies that we do not have this feature in the iPad app, but hopefully our web products can meet your needs. Thank you for the comment and feedback — we will look to add a more robust events section in the future! Caroline, iPad team.

In most cases, I do not want to see ads; however, when I pick up the register, I often do so to review the local ads. For example, what’s the latest Hardin Honda or Crevier BMW lease options available? What is BestBuy pitching in their ads and how about Fry’s electronics? Therefore I recommend an easy way to view these daily ads just like we can do in the print edition. I would think this is a revenue stream for OCRegister and so unsure why I can’t find this in the iPad app.

I’m back! 🙂 I was around to test v1.0. I uninstalled it after a day.

Today, your ad in the ABC News app brought me back for a second look. And, I have to say, v5 is WELL DONE. I think your team is on the right track. Not only with a much better interface and download experience, but also with how you’re keeping up with comments via social media. Heck, even your ad placement seems well considered. Keep up the great work.

P.S. For readers’ future ad placement consideration, can you yet share any stats about distribution and eyeballs for the OCRtablet? Thanks.

Hi Mel, thank you for your kind comment and encouragement! We are still working on upgrading many different aspects of the app, including better tracking our page views and uniques. It’s complicated since our app is comprised of several types of pages such as CCI (which is the system the Register uses to publish the print edition) and HTML as well as slide shows, videos & hot spots. Tracking each interaction has been a daunting task and we’re still working to make sure each tap & swipe is counted. In the meantime, I can share that we’ve had approximately 60,000 app downloads to date. Thank you again for the feedback and please stay in touch! Caroline, iPad team.

My daily paper was not delivered today, so I decided to read the news on my iPad. The Peel gave me everything I needed except for my favorite comic strips. Why aren’t the comics available online? By the time I discovered that my paper had not been delivered it was too late to call to have the paper delivered. All parts of the paper should be included online for situations like this.

    • January 25, 2012 6:44 pm

Hi John, Thank you for your comment. We are exploring adding comics into a Sunday edition and also adding things like crossword puzzles and other content you expect from the print edition. In the meantime, we do include political comics in the iPad “Trending” section daily. Caroline, iPad team.

Great App. Is there a way to share links to pages or stories, ( email, FB, etc.) ? If not, then I think it would be a great enhancement and certainly inspire more downloads of the App.

    • January 25, 2012 6:49 pm

Hi Dr. Nisco, thank you for the kind feedback! There is a sharing function in the upper right corner (facebook, twitter & email), though currently it only works for basic stories (hence, you will see the sharing icons removed for more complex, interactive or HTML stories). We are working on improving the sharing function so videos and slide shows can be shared as well. Caroline, iPad team.

    • January 26, 2012 7:41 pm

Hi Debi, Thank you for the question. Currently we publish Monday through Saturday at 6pm, so new editions come out each evening except Sundays. We hope to have a Sunday edition soon. There are also RSS feeds and a latest news widget (in the upper right corner) in the app that update 24/7. • December 18, 2011 12:40 pm

Hi William, currently the app is free to everyone, and, should we ever start charging a subscription, the plan is to keep it free to our current loyal subscribers. We publish every evening, Monday through Saturday at 6p. And many of the stories in our 6p edition will actually be in the next day’s print edition…so we are actually publishing most stories a day earlier, rather than a day later. Well done. I have watched you start with what seemed a confused trivial mess into a unique offering that is using the multimedia capabilities if the iPad to deliver content that we don’t get other places. I like the features that focus on Orange County since that info is not available through other media sources. You are definitely heading in a good direction and I commend you for what obviously has been a lot of hard and thoughtful work.

I see comments regarding charges for this app. I have lived long enough to know that nothing is ever free. I know you struggle with the issues of ads v content and the cost of good writers v the junk that is freely available in the cloud. I for one would be happy to pay as long as you provide thoughtful, informative, well-written content that is not simply a rehash of the stuff we get from the talking heads. Keep up the good work.

    • November 22, 2011 7:28 pm

      Hi Gregg,

I totally agree with Gregg’s comments, a very well thought out app that’s both informative and fun to read and experience. Good job team!

I think there is some confusion from some of your readers however. This app is not intended to be a replacement to the OC Register printed publication…it never was as far as I can tell. It’s another publication (albeit, an ePublication:-) of a different sorts. There may be some similarities in here and the printed document, but it’s definitely not a one for one. Like some other readers here, I am very interested in getting both OCR The Peel and an official e version of the actual OC Register. I read that this was happening in Nov that a new app called Orange County Register New Edition was coming, but I do not see it yet. Has it just been delayed or what is the current status please?

      • January 26, 2012 7:27 pm

Hi Ken, Thank you for your kind feedback. We currently have both an updated OC Register The Peel app and an OC Register breaking news app in Apple’s hands for approval. Plus, both The Register newsroom and the interactive managers here at Freedom Communications are actively looking at new options to improve both our tablet and mobile offerings in 2012 — good things coming this year and thank you again for your support! • November 22, 2011 7:32 pm

      Hi Tom,
Good question! We are currently working on adding a story position that holds TV listings for sports. We are toying with 2 different formats (1) lifting the “on the air today” section from the print OC Register Sports section or (2) creating a page with links to the schedules of all major local pro & college teams. Do you have a preference? Appreciate the note and feedback! Caroline, iPad team

  29. November 7, 2011 11:44 am

    Hi Paul,
Thank you for the question and kind comment! If you looked behind the curtain of our homepage, you’d see a series of pages containing small boxes (individual stories) that are connected together with what we call “jumps”. Unfortunately, there is no way for these home page boxes to “know” where you tapped last as they are not smart elements. Another way to view stories on our app is to tap the Page Viewer icon. You might find this to be a better way for you to navigate from story to story. Thanks again for the comment and support. Caroline, iPad team.

E Register has too slow download. The app edition is faster but a day late.

    • August 18, 2011 5:48 pm

Hi John, thank you for the comment. The iPad app publishes at 6pm in the evening and features many of the stories our reporting team worked throughout the day — stories that you’ll see in print tomorrow. We also have a “latest news” widget that updates every time a new story is posted to a Register site or blog. Hope this helps clarify and Fight On! Caroline, iPad team

Here’s a few points in comparison to other news apps.
Move the navigation buttons to the top- it’s an iPad app, most people hold there ipad it toward the bottom, so it’s awkward with navigation buttons at bottom too.
When you navigate back, why can’t the previous page be in the same position where you left it
Check out USA today. It is very easy to use, so much easier that I usually go there 1st, even though I prefer oc register content.

    • August 15, 2011 9:04 am

Hi Don, thank you for the feedback! I’m a fan of USA Today as well. Our app reader, Woodwing, which publishes many national magazine tablet apps, places the navigation bar on the bottom by default. Are you using the app in portrait (like a book) or landscape (horizontal)? If you are reading our app in portrait, I’d recommend trying it in landscape. It’s a better way to experience our videos and slide shows and the nav bar may seem less awkward in the horizontal orientation. Again, thanks for the comment; we truly appreciate the feedback as we are still in our “beta” phase! Caroline, iPad team.

    • August 5, 2011 6:44 pm

      Hi Scott,
Thank you for the feedback. If you haven’t already, please add a review of our app in the iTunes store; we truly appreciate the support! Our mobile team — an amazingly talented group — is actually working on a few hyper-local products that they hope to put into development soon. Hi OC Reg iPad team! I was lucky enough to meet some of the iPad team at your offices during a tour offered at #SMdayOC Social Media Day… It was exciting and impressive… It was at 5:30 or so, and we saw the big daily iPad story presentation meeting happening in the glass ‘war-room’… So cool! Anyway, I gave one of the guys some feedback that it would be great to have a ‘welcome’ button (or screen) to lead a new user to a ‘what this app offers you’ page or video. Exactly like the brief live presentation we were given today, I am very tech savvy, yet I admit that when I opened the app for the first time, I was intimidated. Also, why do we have to enter a zip code rather than city/state for weather, as it’s VERY hard to keep different zip codes memorized! All that said, I LOVE this app!

    • July 1, 2011 6:55 pm

Hi Ginger, thanks for the feedback. If you haven’t already, please add your review of the app in the iTunes store — we really appreciate the support! We did an intro video when we first launched. I’ll track it down and re-post it. it shows a lot of the basic app navigation. We actually tried the city/state for weather but it seemed to open up too many possibilities for errors. Believe it or not, that weather widget was completely designed and programmed by our in-house design team — those guys rock. Thank you again for your kind note and glad you enjoyed your experience at the Register yesterday. Caroline, iPad team

Thanks for your comment. The iPad edition is intended to provide different information than the the print version of the OC Register, so Fry’s print ad and the sunday comics are not included. However, you can get the Fry’s ads on our website – http://www.ocregister.com.

    • June 28, 2011 8:19 am

Hi Brian, thanks for the comment and encouragement. I’m a fan of the WSJ app as well. It’s much easier to navigate than most dailies that are going for a print-replica kind of format. I also like that they are creating a 7-day archive. The ability to save past issues is a nice feature….something we’ve had since we launched. It’s interesting to see which features and formats different news organizations are embracing. Thank you again for checking out the app! Caroline, iPad Team member

The most “current” issue is 24 hours old. Why would I want to read old “news?”

    • June 25, 2011 12:19 pm

Hi Jan, thank you for the note. Currently, we publish nightly at 6pm — so a new edition will be coming your way this evening. If you are a Register print subscriber, many of the stories that are in the 6pm iPad edition this evening (Saturday) will be in the Sunday print edition. There are also iPad exclusive features — such as tonight’s behind the scenes feature on “The Voice”. You will always see these features on the iPad first. For up-to-the-minute news, look at the cover page, you’ll see a “latest news” icon in the upper right corner, if you click on that icon, you’ll get the latest stories coming out of our newsroom. I just checked that feed, and the latest story came in 10 minutes ago. I hope that helps clarify and thank you again for the comment! Caroline, iPad Team member

The first thing I noticed while viewing a few of the Register issues, is that the text and photos are not as clear as they should be. I’m using an iPad 2 and am used to seeing very clear and beatifully rendered fonts and images. Both text and images within your articles have jagged edges. Will this be addressed?

    • June 25, 2011 11:44 am

Hi Steve, thank you for the note. Absolutely yes! Improving the text and image resolution is a top priority and has been since we launched the new app. We test new upload and download processes almost weekly — it’s always a balance between keeping the download size realistic and increasing the resolution. If you look in the Photo/Video section and the daily Featured Story, you’ll see that the photos look much sharper — that’s because our Photo Editors — an amazing group that really take pride in their presentation! — are using a Photoshop work-around to load the Photo/Video gallery into each day’s edition. It’s really time-consuming — and not realistic for us to add into the current work flow for other articles — but it demonstrates the commitment we have to making this app visually stunning. Thank you again for the comment and support! Caroline, iPad Team member

Still too long to download and too cumbersome to access features.

    • June 25, 2011 11:27 am

Hi Marcia, thanks for the note. Are you using the progressive download feature? After you start downloading an edition, the cover will “light up” about 10% into the download. If you tap on the cover after it lights up, then immediately tap on the featured story (which will redirect the download to concentrate on the featured story), you should be able to start reading within a minute or two. We are working with our tech partners to lighten the download size and plan to set up a way to download features separately in the Store. Of course our download would be really light if our photos and active elements were streaming instead of embedded, but 25% of our readers are using this app off-line, and we want to make sure their experience is just as robust as when readers are connected to the Internet. That’s why we only stream videos (which take up a lot of space) and embed everything else. Thank you again for the feedback — we are working to improve every day! Caroline, iPad Team member

    • June 25, 2011 11:11 am

Hi Bill, thanks for the question. The app will always reopen in whatever edition you were last reading (June 6th, for example). To get the most updated edition, open the app, then hit the Store icon. In the Store, all editions are dated and the most recent edition is in the top shelf of the Store, Then hit “free” to download the most up-to-date edition. We are working with our vendors and development partners on a solution wherein the most recent edition loads automatically when you open the app. Hope this answers your question and have a great weekend! Great app but it would be even better if you were able to adjust the font size also would love to see a morning edition

    • June 25, 2011 10:52 am

Hi Diane, thanks for the comment! Actually, you can make the font size bigger. When you’re in the article you want to read, just turn the iPad to “portrait” orientation (so you’re holding it upright like a book) then “reverse pinch” using your thumb and index finger over the article. The font size will scale up as you spread your fingers out and contract as you bring your fingers closer together. There’s a small icon in the lower right corner of the article in portrait mode titled “Text Viewing Options” that illustrates this much better than I can explain. Again, thank you for the note and, if you have a moment, please leave a review of our app in the iTunes store if you haven’t already. Enjoy your weekend! Caroline, iPad Team member

I was touring the register today and had learned of this app from the creators. I immediately downloaded the interactive app and love that I had the ability to read off line!!- which is my favorite. As a photographer for my school newspaper I have learned that pictures are worth a thousand words, and each image in the app tells it’s own story. It is very interactive with a large variety of interesting stories. Regarding the “slow download”, it only takes a few minutes at most and it is worth the simple wait. Although I have only been using it for a few hours, I reccomend it to all.

Photos on the iPad look amazing and we really wanted to celebrate the accomplishments of our Photo team by choosing stories that are both newsworthy and have visual impact for the iPad product. Fair point about the download. We decided to go with a download in order to give readers an enhanced experience with high multimedia use and other interactive features. By downloading each edition, you are then also able to read each edition in an offline mode. The download does take time, and we definitely want to cut down on the wait time. We have introduced a feature that will allow you to start reading after about 10% of the download. Simply tap to download. When the cover lights up you can start reading, while the rest of the edition keeps downloading in the background. Hope this is useful information. – Claus, iPad team member.
